Frequently Asked Questions

Bili Blankets

While receiving jaundice treatment at home with Bili Blanket Baby, babies are able to be fed, swaddled, held, and take part in skin-to-skin contact with their parents. In the hospital, often babies are only in a diaper and goggles as a second overhead panel of lights is usually added. As such they must remain in their isolet. The bili blanket itself is often identical. We use the GE BiliSoft 2.0.

No, you don’t need to move the panel. Bilirubin is broken down through the baby's bloodstream, and so the panel works effectively in one position. You might notice a lightened area of skin where the panel touches, which is normal and indicates that surface bilirubin is being “bleached.” This doesn’t mean the jaundice is gone, but just that the light is doing its job.

The bili blanket panel doesn’t generate measurable heat and doesn’t pose a risk to the umbilical cord. In fact, it can even speed healing!

While this varies by baby, on average, most babies use the bili blanket for about 4 days.. You and your provider will determine when it’s safe to stop treatment, and once that happens, please have them send a stop order so we can arrange a return.

If you’re using a GE BiliSoft 2.0, eye protection is recommended. We’ve included an eye cover in your equipment kit.

The bili blanket panel does not generate heat and should not cause burns. However, because the panel is not breathable, it can cause your baby to sweat. Check your baby’s comfort regularly, especially during diaper changes, and adjust their clothing as needed to prevent overheating. If you're concerned your baby has a fever, contact your pediatrician immediately.

Newborns sleep a lot, especially during their first weeks. Elevated bilirubin levels can also make them sleepier. Premature babies are often more drowsy, and many babies find the comfort of the bili blanket soothing, leading to more sleep. While sleepiness is normal, it can interfere with feeding, so we recommend feeding frequently during phototherapy to help reduce bilirubin levels. As jaundice levels drop, your baby will gradually become more alert.

It’s not necessary for the baby’s head to be on the panel. In the hospital, the head is usually exposed to the light since babies can’t be swaddled. At home, you can slide the panel down to expose the same amount of skin while still allowing the baby to be swaddled or wear a nightgown, which can help keep them comfortable.

If your provider has ordered continuous phototherapy, the bili blanket should be used without interruption, except for diaper changes and medical appointments. Your provider will let you know when it’s safe to stop, based on your baby’s bilirubin levels.

It’s common for bilirubin levels to rise initially after starting treatment, especially since it can take several hours for the bili blanket to begin showing its effect. Typically, after 24 hours of continuous use, bilirubin levels will stabilize and begin to decrease. Consult with your provider for further guidance and to monitor your baby’s progress.

You can put a snap-up sleeper or nightgown on your baby as long as nothing obstructs the skin from coming in contact with the treatment panel. Ensure that no fabric is between your baby’s skin and the bili blanket, as it will block the treatment light.

Your pediatrician is the best person to interpret your baby’s bilirubin levels and assess their risk. The Bhutani Nomogram, developed by Stanford researchers, is widely used to assess jaundice severity, but only your provider can determine your baby’s individual risk and treatment plan. Here's a link to an interactive interpretation tool.

Avoid using lotions or creams on your baby’s torso during phototherapy, as it can interfere with the light’s effectiveness. You can apply these products to your baby’s arms or legs, but ensure nothing is applied to their torso.

If your provider has indicated stopping treatment but wants to keep the bili blanket, please request a stop order be sent to us. We’ll then arrange for the return process. If your baby’s bilirubin levels rise again, you can always rent another bili blanket.

We provide four disposable covers, typically enough for a week or more. If you need more, please contact us. We can either deliver more or mail them to you. If you run out, don’t worry—your baby can continue treatment without them.

Once your pediatrician sends us a stop order, we’ll initiate the return process. You are also welcome to call to initiate at any time.

Hospital-Grade Symphony Breast Pumps

We are happy to schedule a consultation with one of our RN, IBCLCs for you. Please call us at 877-593-2454 to get that scheduled!

Ensure all parts are clean and dry. Connect the tubing to the pump and breast shields. Attach the membranes and valves to the breast shields, then connect the bottles. For detailed assembly instructions, refer to the Symphony Instruction Manual.

The Symphony offers two programs:

  • INITIATE: Designed for the first few days postpartum to stimulate milk production.
  • MAINTAIN: Used after milk has come in to maintain supply. Switch to MAINTAIN once you’re producing around 20 mL in a session or by day 6 postpartum.

The tunnel of the breast shield should surround your nipple closely without rubbing or leaving too much space. A proper fit avoids discomfort and optimizes milk flow. Medela offers sizing guides to help you find the right fit.

  • INITIATE: The pump runs for 15 minutes and shuts off automatically.
  • MAINTAIN: You control session length (typically ~15 minutes). The pump will automatically shut off after 30 minutes if not manually stopped.

It’s the highest suction level that still feels comfortable. Gradually increase the vacuum until it starts to feel slightly uncomfortable, then reduce slightly to find your optimal level.

Make sure the power cord is securely plugged into both the wall outlet and the hidden compartment on the back of the pump. The back compartment has a sliding door—be sure the cord is fully connected inside.

  • Ensure all parts are correctly assembled.
  • Inspect membranes for wear—replace them if they appear stretched or damaged.
  • Membranes typically need replacing every 1–3 months.

The pump automatically shuts off after 30 minutes, whether operating on battery or electric power.

This often indicates an obstruction in the tubing. Also check that membranes and caps are securely attached.

The internal battery is nearly depleted. The pump will beep every 20 seconds and will continue for 15 minutes before automatically shutting off. Connect the power cord and confirm it’s properly seated.

  • INVALID CARD: The program card may be damaged or inserted incorrectly. Remove and reinsert it.
  • NO CARD: The pump doesn’t detect the program card. Ensure it’s fully inserted into the back panel slot.

A system error signals a malfunction.

    1. Try a soft reboot:
    • Hold the letdown button, then hold the on/off button.
    • Release both when “please wait” appears.
    2. If that fails, try a hard reboot:
    • Remove the program card from the back.
    • Gently wipe and dry it.
    • Reinsert and restart the pump.

Disassemble and wash all parts that come into contact with milk in warm, soapy water after each use. Rinse well and air dry. For more details, follow the cleaning instructions in the Symphony Instruction Manual

  • Membranes: Replace every 1–3 months or sooner if suction drops.
  • Other parts (valves, shields, tubing): Replace as needed depending on use and wear.

Maternity And Lactation

If insurance is going to cover the services, you will need a signed referral on file. If we provide you a breast pump or bili blanket, we already have the signed order on file!

You’re eligible for free services if you have coverage with Health First Colorado (Medicaid), Colorado Access CHP+, Rocky Mountain Health Plan (all types, including Medicaid and CHP+), or Tricare West. If you don't have one of those plans, we offer these services as cash pay options as well and will provide a receipt for you to submit a claim through your insurance.

Yes! We offer both in-person and telehealth visits so you can choose what works best for your family. Most things lend themselves well to telehealth so we are very happy to offer that resource to families.

It’s helpful to meet within the first week if possible, especially if you have concerns about latching, pain, or milk supply. But it’s never too late—our team can support you at any stage of your breastfeeding journey. We also highly recommend a prenatal consult!

Absolutely! Lactation support is for all feeding journeys—whether you’re breastfeeding, pumping, formula feeding, or a mix of both.

Medicaid or CHP+: As often as needed; Tricare: Up to 100 bags per month

Please contact the manufacturer directly while you’re near your pump. They’ll ask for the serial number and help with troubleshooting. If your pump has a defect and is less than a year old, they’ll usually replace it free of charge.

We currently carry Medela, Motif, and Spectra pumps. Our website always shows the most up-to-date options, and we’re open to adding new brands if there’s enough demand.

Yes! You can order milk storage bags on their own—just select exactly what you need.

Once we receive your order and a signed prescription from your provider, your pump will ship the same day. If there’s a delay, it’s usually because the signed order hasn’t been submitted yet—insurance requires this to cover the pump. As soon as your order ships, you’ll get a tracking number by email.

You’re eligible if you have coverage with Health First Colorado (Medicaid), Colorado Access CHP+, Rocky Mountain Health Plan (all types, including Medicaid and CHP+), or Tricare West. Eligible members can receive one free electric single-user breast pump and one free manual breast pump per pregnancy.

We provide one-on-one consultations with an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Support can include help with latching, milk supply concerns, pumping, bottle-feeding, and general breastfeeding questions.

Bring your baby, your breast pump (if you’re using one), and any feeding supplies you’d like help with. We’ll walk through everything together.

These are on our radar and coming soon!
